Rinspeed has unveiled its annual concept for the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, this time in the form of the all-electric ‘XchangE’.
For 2014, however, Rinspeed has decided to focus on what the car interior of the future may look like, as fully-autonomous cars grow ever-closer to becoming an everyday reality.
“Not even flying is better”, says the bold claim attached to the XchangE EV concept, which offers passengers rotating ‘business class-style’ reclining seats and a sliding ‘steer-by-wire’ steering wheel that can be ‘parked’ out of the way in the middle of the dash.
A small coffee table with fold-out computer keyboard sits where the centre console would normally be and the flat floor offers no discernable ‘line’ between the front and rear seats.
The XchangE focuses on using the time one could gain by letting their autonomous vehicle do all the work, with music and game console facilities along with internet connectivity, so passengers can “hold a meeting at 120km/h” (the Swiss motorway speed limit).
“I am given free time that I can use for myself anyway I please, while the sensor systems and the computer chauffeur me safely and reliably to my destination,” Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht said.
“So far hardly anyone has taken this to its logical conclusion from the perspective of the driver. After all, traveling in a driverless car will no longer require me to stare at the road, but will let me spend my time in a more meaningful way”.
The Geneva Motor Show will take place from March 6-16, 2014.
